Jobboom in Toronto
More than 9,000 job seekers gathered in Toronto this week for the 10th edition of The National Job Fair & Training Expo. Nearly 120 organizations from Canada, the U.S. and South Korea attended, with more than 3,500 job opportunities to fill in various fields. Jobboom.com was there to offer employers a special deal on posting jobs on our site. We also encouraged hundreds of job seekers to register and create career profiles.

NEWSWORTHY
Real estate market threatens mobility
A softening real estate market is threatening employee mobility in the US. In many cases candidates are turning down job offers that require them to sell their homes and relocate. Also companies are no longer chipping-in to mitigate any losses caused by the untimely sale of new employees' homes. Often times, "telecommuting" helps bridge the gap, but this is only temporarily. One global watchdog pegged the average cost for a company relocating a new employee at $64,000.

Employee entrance ceremonies across Japan
Japan has a stringent corporate culture. However, April 1 was the start of the fiscal year that allowed formal entrance ceremonies for new employees and haiku-like benedictions for all. Some municipal workers attended this year's proceedings dressed for the gym, but that's because their first order of business was earthquake recovery.

Japanese boomers shift gears
Out with the old and in with the new. The new fiscal year in Japan means that the first round of boomers will begin to retire-seeking to enjoy the fruits of their labours. These suddenly free-wheeling and wealthy retirees will single handedly create the country's "grey economy."

TRENDSPOTTING
This is job recruiting?
As a labour-shortage looms, the job market heats up, and a talent war escalates. Companies are resuming their aggressive, and sometimes whacky, ways to recruit top graduates. Not too long ago corporate America was cutting benefits, but now with a lower unemployment rate, job seekers have more negotiating power and clout.

GO GREEN!
100-Mile Suit
As you get dressed in the morning, "business casual" may be one of the notions swirling in your mind. However, there's one socially conscious designer who dreams of "global economy," "industrial process," "sweat shops," and "Wal-Mart" in her morning daze. She set out to make a men's business suit out of exclusively local materials. A total of 20 like-minded artisans toiled for a total of 500 hours to make the finished product, which even included itchy, wool underwear and socks.
