  2007 HRIA Highlights
More than 600 HR professionals from across Alberta learned more about Jobboom during a two-day professional development event. The conference focused on the current challenges in Western Canada and new directions for employers. The "Explore the Possibilities" theme fit in well with the many Jobboom-sponsored initiatives available for delegates, including a presentation from Leonard Brody (one of Canada's leading technology forecasters and business strategists), a White Glove networking event and a gathering at Jobboom's Internet Café.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
Drug Test Cowboys
While some individuals enjoy striving on the job for big bucks, others prefer to make their way doing as little work as possible. For this latter group, thank goodness for the movie and pharmaceutical industries. Compared side-by-side: working as an extra in a crowd scene may actually take more time and energy than being a guinea pig for drug trials. Yet, as a trial subject, despite being surrounded by the country's top medical minds and care, there can be sinister and significant risks.

CAREER PATH
Leadership begins at school
Instead of "spacing out" in class, a student's time is better spent finding ways to boss around his or her peers. After all, leaders aren't made overnight. It's a lifelong process. According to a study by human resources managers, an overwhelming majority of top executives in the workforce held at least two leadership roles during their schooling.

TRENDSPOTTING
Infidelity among road warriors
Now that the warm and fuzzy feelings associated with Valentine's Day have faded, its' time to delve into one of the darker workplace realities confronting spouses and committed couples. According to the USA Today, what happens on the road, stays on the road for many who travel on business trips. And if co-workers are involved, employers could get dragged down in the fallout.

AROUND THE WATER COOLER
Tears and careers
Tom Hanks had a memorable line in the 1992 "A League of Their Own." As the manager of an all-women professional baseball team, he famously said, "There's no crying in baseball!" At the time that was perhaps true. However times have changed and so have expectations in the workplace. No need to be old-fashioned. Instead, shedding a tear may now be interpreted as a sign of an individual possessing a high emotional intelligence quotient.

Do you... drink too much coffee? You may be mistaken. Now scientists are trumpeting the health benefits of this workplace tonic.
According to a panel of scientists, drinking coffee can help ward off type 2 diabetes and prevent types of colon cancer, as well as rectal and liver cancer.
It does so by reducing the amount of cholesterol, bile acid and natural sterol secretion in the colon and speeding up the passage of stool.
Coffee had a very negative health image, said one of the doctors.
