Teenage girls hope for film star glory in Cannes
Invariably, your teenage daughter is running with the wrong crowd if she’s at Cannes canvassing for a summer job, hoping to be discovered, or if she cites Paris Hilton as a role model. The film industry’s most prestigious festival, on the shores of the Mediterranean, draws droves of would-be starlets and celebrity hangers-on. One aspiring red-carpet-debutante strategy is to talk to anyone who looks vaguely important.

There is such a thing as a free lunch
Are you fidgety in your cubicle, suffering from the malaise of the modern condition? Do you wonder what the latest buzz is from the activist, counter-culture, anti-commercial underworld? Do you... want to fight? In an instance where life immitates art, an increasing number of disgruntled Californian cubicle dwellers are turning to "fight clubs," an insane notion popularized by a movie of the same name.
  • Every two weeks, some Silicon Valley techies turn into vicious street brawlers in a real-life, underground fight club.
  • Underground bare-knuckle brawling clubs have sprung up across the country as a way for desk jockeys and disgruntled youths to vent their frustrations and prove themselves.
  • Most participants are men working in the high-tech industry.
  • Local police aren't likely to take action because the fights are on private property between consenting adults.
  • "I came here to get over my fear of fighting, and it's working," said one participant. "If things were to get tough, I can get tough, too."
