NEWSWORTHY
Fashion to discuss thin models
Niche workplace issues abound for the high-cheekboned, scantily clad and runway-strutting set. Heads of the world's best fashion houses will look at the industry-wide practice of employing waif-like women to model their clothes, perpetuating an unhealthy and, perhaps, unattainable female body image. The Spaniards were the first to raise the bar, in terms of body-mass, which may eventually mean a second wind for many aspiring models.

HEALTH/SAFETY
New help for insomniacs
Critics worry about a nation of sleep-deprived zombies operating heavy machinery and the switches of power (like in Michael Jackson's Thriller music video, but way worse). Narcoleptics may have opened researchers' eyes to what part of the brain is responsible for wakefulness. By blocking a brain receptor, scientists were able to induce sleep in rodents, dogs and humans. These initial results hold great promise for forever sheep-counting insomniacs.

Caffeine buzz added to baked goods
All together now, à la Homer Simpson: "Mmmmmmm, doughnuts!" In Canada, the world's First Nation of Doughnuts, this qualifies as a major breakthrough. A South Carolina scientist discovered how to add enough caffeine to doughnuts to pack the power of a two-coffee punch. First Nation of Doughnuts? Alas, yes. Canada consumes more doughnuts than any other country in the world, even China.

CYBERSPOTTING
The year hacking became a business
If you're mismatched in your current job as a network technician or in a technical support role, perhaps computer hacking was the right avenue for you after all. While it's been on and off society's collective radar for a while, hacking is making a big comeback in the underworld since identity theft makes cracking computer security a lucrative business. The problem with working in identity theft is you can never be too sure of whom you're talking to.

PROFILE
Logging demanding, dangerous
Lumberjacks in the forestry industry get major props for the tough work they do - it's a widely held belief that they have the most dangerous job. And what else do we know? Well, "Danny McGee," from the Kelllog's commercial, would have us believe that the work causes an insatiable, mid-morning hunger for bowls of Raisin Bran.

Do you... worry about flying? In the name of peace-of-mind and uneventful air travel, and for a glimpse into an engineering "odd job," find out the different challenges Airbus engineers had to overcome while plumbing the new A380.

•  The double-decker, 853-passenger A380 will be able to make non-stop flights of 8,000 nautical miles and cruise at speeds of Mach 0.85.
•  These plumbers are critical to perfecting the A380's 3,280 feet of waste and water pipes.
•  Passengers are often careless about what goes "down the loo," and that can lead to a public relations nightmare, as well as an in-flight disaster. Hence, engineers are now droping socks and spoons in toilets to see what happens!
•  The Airbus' plumbing is capable of pumping sewage along the 66-yard length in about two seconds - a sewage speed record, perhaps.
