Ramadan and the workplace
The global village means that people have to live in much closer proximity to each other than before. This requires greater doses of tolerance and understanding. Although most North American workplaces are secular environments, respecting individuals' religious freedom is an important part of working together and getting along. Because of recent world events, Islam seems to be at the forefront of everyone's minds. Yet, many Judeo-Christians still don't know about Ramadan (an annual period of fasting currently underway) and keep inviting their Muslim colleagues to lunch.

Five bad reasons to change careers
Despite your deepest desires, it's not a good idea to get a haircut while going through a personal crisis (think Britney Spears). You may regret the move once the fog clears. The same advice holds true for changing careers. You may dislike a particular boss or loathe your current job, but chances are your career isn't the root of your misery. Try to remember why you got into this line of work in the first place and avoid impulsive wooly-headed decision making. There's something to be said for perseverance. Remember the grade school dictum: If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

Just a couple of years ago it was the age of the teen Internet entrepreneur and the North American workforce couldn't shove its older, more experienced workers out the door fast enough. Shoo! Now, like an impassioned lover pleading temporary insanity, it wants them back. Drama! They were once criticized for being too costly in terms of payroll and out-of-touch in terms of technology. Now, some savvy companies are making their workplace conditions more appealing these older workers on the cusp of retirement as one strategy in combating the upcoming talent shortage.

Online carpooling revs up
London, an industrial town in southwestern Ontario, often plays second fiddle to its more prominent namesake across the pond. It's not a capital of culture, fashion nor finance. However, it should be praised for its latest ecological initiative-grouping commuters from its surrounding area into carpools. Municipal officials have created an online resource where eco-conscious Londoners register their route, schedule and musical preferences. The latter being the most important match. Can you imagine the road rage brewing between the older hippie and the techno kid while sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic?
