Newsworthy
Work stress and job performance
The correlation between stress and job performance is dominating career news headlines as of late. The net result: voices around the office are shrill and building into a crescendo. For the mathematically inclined at Statistics Canada who plot stress and productivity on charts, the line resembles a bell curve. A certain amount of stress can be a good thing, though after a certain point it can affect employees’ productivity and their organization’s competitiveness.

Trendspotting
Irked by Incompetent Co-workers
A new survey of Canadian employees reveals that they are a peevish bunch with numerous gripes about work. Incompetent management is the one issue most likely to get under their skin, with negative colleagues, organizational hypocrisy, whining, poor communication and mindless meetings coming in close behind. Only slightly less aggravating are colleagues with bad body odour or breath, and other potent smells. Inappropriate dress, lack of privacy, commuting, disgruntled co-workers, and co-workers answering cell phones or PDAs during meetings and bragging about salary are also common complaints, but the list goes on. Judging by the results, flirtatious co-workers are least of their worries.

Green Workplace
Roundup of eco-office tips
If the thought of polar bears drowning in the Arctic is keeping you from concentrating on your work, perhaps it’s time to get up from your workstation and start greening your office. This LA Times blog provides a handy roundup of eco-office tips, though it may be a tough pill to swallow in a city with 28-lane-wide highways, endless traffic jams, poor public transportation, unsafe sidewalks and poor urban planning.

Workplace Challenges
Pump up the volume
The iPod revolution has changed many North American individuals’ relationships to music. In the workplace, these personal, digital music players provide an added benefit of blocking the unwanted noise from too-close-for-comfort neighbours in open-concept offices. Is anyone still tuned into the bland sentimentality of analogue, pop music wafting from the Low-Fi radio in the mailroom at work lately? Chances are, probably not.

Career Options
Careers for romantics
The depressing days of February have passed and people’s thoughts are now turning to spring, warmer weather, and inevitably, romance. Dancing around the maypole and such. However, if you’re a hopeless romantic, perhaps you’d best follow your heart and seek out a career suited to your disposition. You don’t have to be able to belt out a tune R’n’B style to spread love and romance all year long. In fact, careers that dabble in matters of the heart are wide-ranging and diverse. In light of current statistics, becoming a chocolatier could bring a skilled individual a whole new level of popularity.

So you think you can dance?
The Florida Marlins baseball team is looking for a few fat men to join their dubiously named cheerleading squad, the Manatees. - The team hopes to recruit seven to 10 tubby men to dance, cheer and jiggle during Friday and Saturday home games this season. - The manatee-sized men must be more agile than their namesakes and will be judged on how well they dance a choreographed routine. - The Marlins already have a cheerleading squad, the considerably more svelte Mermaids. - The Marlins aren't the only pro sports team capitalizing on Americans' expanding waistlines. The Chicago Bulls basketball team has the Matadors, a big-man dance troupe that’s entertained fans at home games since 2003.
