Iowa woman fired for journaling at work
Over the past several years, the Boomerang's most attentive readers have already seen different versions of this story. What's new about this, apart from the fact that the events took place in Iowa, is that the journal in question began as a pen and paper project, rather than an online blog -- which is supposedly much more common these days. And rather than create an alter ego or wistful ruminations about a dream job, the journal was mainly a log of ways to avoid work.

Silicon Valley would get mixed wireless network
Not a municipality to play second fiddle in the realm of high tech and new media, Silicon Valley plans to set up a mixed wireless network, thereby one-upping those cities that already blanketed their downtown cores with open wireless Internet grids. This means it will be more complex with both paid- and free-access, yet more financially sustainable. In many previous municipal Wi-Fi experiments, the social aspect of getting low-income, urban families "on the net" overshadowed the more practical question of who was going to pay for it.

A cubicle of one's own
A writer's life? For some it's a question of time, for others a question of talent. If you're an aspiring hack with an irrepressible spirit and need to escape the daily grind let out your internal howl, the Toronto Writers' Centre is just the place. Members of this Yorkville hideaway can check into a cubicle surrounded by like-minded souls: intense competition or needless procrastination will surely ensue.

Top 10 Barbie careers
Barbie has a certain image. However, in the year 2007, it's unfair to assume that she's not a very capable young woman. When not dating Ken at the local soda fountain or zipping around town in her pink Corvette, she keeps busy with a variety of professional pursuits. Understandably, a modern, independent woman has to find ways to afford all of those different outfits.

Do you... feel mediocre about your career in media?
Well, buck up. A pack of new studies show that the future looks bright for newspapers and television despite relentless challenges from new media.

•  Studies released at the National Conference for Media Reform contend that economic prospects are strong for newspapers and TV stations.
•  Their forecasts run counter to a widely held view that digital media and the Internet have dramatically altered the economic landscape for traditional media.
•  Consumer groups argue that Internet blogs, community sites and even local cable news channels still are not much competition for newspapers and broadcasters.
•  People still prefer to get local news from familiar institutions and reporters, they say.
