Bankers stay home = less pollution
The average Londoner would have a hard time mustering up any sympathy for the City’s bankers and other financial tycoons, who parade around the financial district in pastel pink shirts and bespoke Savile Row suits, pockets brimming with million dollar bills. As it turns out, the UK’s credit crunch has actually been good for the environment, keeping these well-heeled bankers at bay rather than jetting around the globe doing due diligence, racking up Air Miles and emitting tons of carbon dioxide. In a bid to reduce costs, banks and other financial institutions are asking their top guns to broker their deals differently via virtual data rooms, or VDRs.

Finnish cabinet ministers to start sporty life
The battle of the bulge has finally reached Scandinavia — a region once known for its svelte bikini teams — but the Finnish government is fighting back by bringing fitness into the workplace. At some point between the off-site meetings fuelled by a flood of rich, whole-milk cappuccinos and fine pastries, and duffing around the links with the backroom cronies, lies a healthier option - the power walk meeting. And, according to the Health Minister, Finnish cabinet meetings will be following this agenda come fall. While this may sound like a stellar initiative for the fat-cat politicians, spare a thought for the secretaries who will be scrambling to scrawl down meeting minutes while power walking at the same time.

Cyberspotting
Phish Your Colleagues
Times have changed. Prior to the advent of the Internet, “Phish” referred to a psychedelic rock band from Vermont known for their extended jams and endless summer tours. Now, “phishing,” refers to deceptive Internet practices designed to bilk unsuspecting netizens of their cash, identity or both. On a corporate level, defrauded companies could stand to lose millions as a result of such breaches. So, some corporate leaders are phishing their own employees in a bid to test their employees’ gullibility and evaluate whether they pose a security threat. Remember, only the paranoid survive.

Work/Life Balance
Feasting on success
The rise of the celebrity chef is directly proportionate to the number of North Americans who can’t muster the know-how to toast bread or boil water, let alone prepare a family meal. This article profiles one such individual who shares his career path from dish-pit “steward” to TV cooking show host. David Adjey attributes his success to having the right moves in the kitchen and charisma in the dining room, both of which enable him to charm the pants off diners. Forget the old stereotype of the gruff character chained to a hot stove, being a successful celebrity chef in today’s world requires both people skills and culinary skills.

Career Planning
Building a beautiful career
Many beauticians cater to their clients’ sense of vanity and quest for superficial perfection. “Darling, you look absolutely fabulous!” As such, much of the work is elective in nature. However, a higher ground has now been established via a new medical aesthetics program at the Champlain Institute in Toronto, which is one of only two institutions in the GTA to offer this new, specialized training. Students learn how to use laser technology and perform microdermabrasions, chemical peels and other non-invasive treatments to treat a variety of skin conditions, from hyperpigmentation and scarring to burns and acne.

Does your cubicle stand out? Peeking at other people’s workstations appeals to everyone’s inner-voyeur.
  • Many employees use their cubicles to carve out an identity in the workplace.
  • Companies in creative fields tend to be more lenient with regards to desk decor.
  • Customized cubes can create tension in the workplace.
  • To avoid conflicts, many corporations have clamped down on decorations.
