11 questions for Indiana Jones' whip trainer
Anthony De Longis is a movie weapons specialist. His career path began with childhood fantasies of Robin Hood, then toiling as an actor, and finally a foray in fencing. Now he’s worked with some of the silver screen’s biggest names, including training Harrison Ford in the role of Indiana Jones. This self-styled whip trainer reveals some of the tricks of the trade and plugs his ranch training facility with sword work, archery, and knife and tomahawk throwing.

Professional Development
No, I'm the greatest
Not everyone has the self-confidence of Muhammad Ali, the double greatest. And while boasting may have seemed below the belt at some point in the past, it’s an important workplace survival skill, whether in the boxing ring or in the confines of an office. The author flexes her literary muscle by listing an impressive survey of Western culture’s boastful literary heroes of—but is it boasting? Despite any upper-class pretence, the fact remains, in a world of work where performance is increasingly based on petty subjectivity, it’s good to state your accomplishments out loud and often.

Education/Training
Death by degree at British university
The retirement of the Baby Boomers will shape the future of the North American workplace. Yet some enterprising individuals are looking even further ahead, to the inevitable moment when they die. Just like there’s a current boom in sectors of the economy that deal with geriatric care. Soon enough, death will be big business too. In recognition of this upcoming change, Bath University is offering degrees in Death and Society, a one-year Bachelor’s or a two-year Master’s. An excellent education, no doubt, but an even better first date conversation!

Career Planning
Generation green
In the past, landscaping has been a popular choice of employment among high school lads, and why not, working outside, catching some rays, making some bucks. Now the environmental movement created the option of roofscaping—landscaping green rooftops. It’s this kind of thinking that’s creating a boom in the construction trades, as they adapt their policies and practices to their clients’ growing environmental demands. LEED, anyone? Look it up.

Workplace Issues
Big wheels, big success
Although trucker hats made trucking mainstream, it’s still a non-traditional career for women. Transportation remains a male-dominated industry. A childhood fascination with trucks led one woman to face the odds, overcome hyper macho attitudes and carve out a successful career in long haul trucking. She’s now writing a book, an analysis of road rage based on her time behind the wheel.

Do you... passively resist? A latter-day Ghandi in Wisconsin is on a gas strike, biking or walking everywhere instead, including his 14.5 km pedal to work and back.
  • Brian LaFave has parked his pickup truck and is refusing to buy gas for a month, possibly longer.
  • He’s riding his bicycle or walking everywhere he goes.
  • He bikes to his third-shift job at Aldrich Chemical in Sheboygan Falls, a 9-mile (14.5 km) commute.
  • "I did like a practice run ... two days in a row to make sure I could do it," he said. "I'm not in the greatest shape."
  • He plans to compute his savings and donate that amount to a charity that provides food to children in Africa.
