Training
Lights, camera, reality
Reality TV is as riveting as it is repulsive. Where do these self-absorbed extroverted contestants come from? Are they for real? In the near future, the next million dollar winner may be the best and brightest graduate of the New York Reality TV School. After all, D-list celebrity is serious business. The workshop for aspiring reality TV actors includes a “prep walk” where fame-seekers jeer and insult their classmates in order to build up their emotional immunity. According to the head instructor, a lot of the curriculum has to do with teaching the students to “be themselves.”

Newsworthy
When companies get cheap, workers get unhappy
Doing more with less is a euphemism of sorts, but behind one can find the harsh realities of cutting cost and boosting profits. The author of a new book Love The Work, Hate The Job, identifies a fundamental tension; between workers striving to do their jobs well and management focused on short-term profits. For nearly the past decade, he’s followed four Seattle-based companies, including Microsoft. His book discusses the widespread breakdown in the social contract between companies and workers.

Resumés
Almost half of résumés are bogus
Fretting over fudging the dates on your resume? Well you’re not alone. According to a recent study almost half of resumes contain inaccuracies. A Burlington (VT) company spent nearly six months fact checking over 1,000 resumes—from entry level to executive. Forty-seven percent contained errors regarding the dates of employment, job titles, and educational background. It appears that the headlines exposing the similar lies by high-profile company chiefs are just the tip of the corporate iceberg.

Career Planning
Aspiring sports reporters score a new course
A new sports journalism program at Centenial College is a springboard into steamy, locker-room interviews with panting, sweaty, and half-naked individuals—the stars of the wide world of sports. The yearlong program will teach print, TV, radio, online, as well as podcasting and students will also have to complete a six-week work placement program. While many people have goals in life, only a select few make their living filling the airwaves with “Gooooooooool!” screamed at the top of their lungs.

Relaxation/Vacation
Packing up the kids
Travel is a lifelong pursuit. However, the art of vacationing changes over time. While twenty-something backpackers are content to buy a ticket, hop on the next plane and let the cards fall where they may, heads of households might have to do a significant amount of planning and budgeting to make any family outing a success. Fortunately, advances in global telecommunications have made the chore of vacation planning much less daunting.

Do you... work long hours? Perhaps not! A recent ranking by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development revealed the average number of hours worked by citizens of its 32 member countries.
  • South Koreans work the longest hours per year, on average, out of every other OECD member.
  • Greece comes second in the OECD's rankings with 2,052 hours worked on average each year
  • Rounding out the top five are a trio of Eastern European nations: Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland.
  • The U.S. is also above the OECD average, coming at No. 9, with 1,797 hours worked on average each year.
  • France is famed for a short working week, but their 35-hour week is currently in a state of flux.
  • Bottom of the list are the tall and amiable Dutch, who work an average 1,391 hours per year.
