NEWSWORTHY
Employee suspended over eyebrow piercing
This article is a riveting news story-literally-about reasonable accommodation in the workplace over a grocery clerk's eyebrow ring. The 22-year-old cashier initially complied with her employer's wishes, but now she wears the ring out of principle and is ready to play hardball-simply because other employees have all sorts of other body piercings.

IN THE HOTSPOT
Posting on the Web? Employers watching
There's hypocrisy in North American corporate attitudes regarding an individual's self-published pet-projects on the Internet. While employers are eager to hear about a job candidate's web site or blog during an interview, they become slightly more leery once the individual becomes an employee. It's a double-edged sword. Yes, perhaps it was one of the reasons you were hired, but due to companies' not-on-my-payroll stance your web presence could also be the root of your demise.

CAREER PATH
Money not the main motivator
There's an "engagement deficit" in Canadian workplaces. "A what?" you may wonder. It's the realization that a higher salary won't squeeze more productivity out of disenfranchised employees-those who don't perform at full capacity or would rather not come into work. Instead, intangibles like a positive perception of upper management, opportunities for input and contributing to decisions are most likely to engage individuals in their work.

Work-life balance boosts workplace ethics
This seems like an odd correlation. Yet, 60 per cent of full-time adult employees said that job dissatisfaction was the leading cause of unethical behaviour at work. Survey respondents were nearly unanimous about "work-life balance" being an effective antidote in fighting this temptation. An exemplary tone set by upper management is another way to preemptively keep employees on the straight-and-narrow.

Career Starters vs. Grad Students
Many people went to school for their careers, others make a career out of going to school-never leaving the ivory towers of academia. Recent university grads are at a crossroad-whether to enter the big, bad "real world," or to enroll for another year of hitting the books. After all, if university is supposed to be the best four year's of your life, why not prolong the stint indefinitely? A Master's could help your job prospects, as long as grad school isn't an elaborate procrastination technique.

Do you... remember how to ride a bike? European and North American municipalities are being proactive about alternatives to driving in order to reduce traffic and pollution. As Canada thaws and gas prices soar perhaps it's time to find a new route to work.
| |
The initiatives are modeled on the success of Lyon, France, where low-cost bike rentals have curbed car traffic. |
| |
Now Portland and Paris are making bike rentals available across their cities. |
| |
San Francisco, Chicago and Washington, D.C. are also considering city-wide bike rental programs. |
| |
To be successful cities must offer bike lanes, educate drivers and enforce traffic so cars and bikes can safely co-exist. |
| |
In Portland, a non-profit group began offering free bikes a few years ago, but most of the bikes were stolen. |
