Jobboom Welcomes Business Writer

Well-known business writer and editor P.J. Harston will now be featured weekly in the Jobboom career section of the Toronto Sun. Mr. Harston landed his first newspaper job when he was just 16, and is now responsible for business and money news in six Sun Media daily newspapers. He believes news should be fun and colourful and promises his writing will not be "a bland rehash of business stuff."

NEWSWORTHY
A frightening new job strategy
To paraphrase Joan Rivers: "Better a new face coming out of an old car, than an old face out of a new car." Now this odd witticism applies to the workforce and job seekers. Rampant ageism seems to mean that 40 is too old to start over in the workforce. As a result, older workers are doing their best to look younger and this can mean drastic measures. Rather than padding their resumes, some are opting for facelifts, not out of vanity, but rather out of the need to put bread on the table.

"Age friendly" workplaces on the rise
North America's fascination with youth and beauty has made it difficult for aging workers to find gainful employment, or specifically, to find a salary that reflects their years of experience. A recent survey of Baby Boomers reveals that the vast majority will stay in the workforce well beyond their expected retirement. Previously, an ignored demographic in terms of recruiting, these graying workers will ease the looming talent crunch.

CAREER PATH
Did you lie on your résumé?
American media is abuzz with the resignation of Marilee Jones, MIT's dean of admissions. It turns out she lied on her resume -28 years ago - to get her present job, stating that she had three diplomas. To her credit she did have one Bachelor's degree, but not from any of the schools she included on her resume. According to one expert, 10 to 30 per cent of job applicants distort or fabricate facts. Those in a similar situation must ponder: is it riskier to remain silent than to come clean?

WATER COOLER
Cubicle dwellers are his world
Scott Adams, the creator of the comic strip Dilbert, seems to have his ear to the carpeted ground of corporate North America. He spoke recently at a Human Resources convention, noting that there's a limit on an individual's happiness while working from a "fabric covered box."

HEALTH AND SAFETY
Workers ill at ease
It seems like pharmaceutical companies are interested in creating expensive drugs for everything. So it begs the question, just what is normal behaviour? Yet, dealing with mental illness in the workplace is a growing concern for both employees and bosses. In many cases it remains a taboo subject and sick employees never return to their jobs. This exodus is a major cost to corporations who suddenly need to fill these vacant positions.
