A Boom in Registrations
Since January, Jobboom has noticed a marked increase in registrations from the Atlantic provinces, according to the latest independent audit. The figures indicate that both job seeking and recruiting on Jobboom are up. In Newfoundland, there have been 21% more job seeker registrations and 29% more unique visitors. New Brunswick job seeker registration numbers have also increased by about 19% and unique website visits have increased by 23%.

NEWSWORTHY
Immigrants 'real engine' for growth
Melting pots and cultural mosaics notwithstanding, Canada and the United States are similar because their populations are made up largely of immigrants. However, the two countries seem to be moving in opposite directions from this shared issue. The Americans want to build high fences, while, in Canada, open-door immigration is a handy measure to counter a lagging birth-rate.

Workplace drug abuse abating
Due to a crackdown among American employers with drug testing programs and the ensuing heightened paranoia among their employees, drug abuse in the workplace was down in 2006. According to the study, amphetamine and marijuana are among the most prevalent. In most cases, it means looking for work elsewhere if you’re not going to take the test.

CAREER PATH
Resumé lost in the ether
What happens if you don’t succeed? You try, try again—of course! If your ratio of resumés sent to job interviews obtained causes you to ponder metaphysical questions, then it’s time to take a step back and size up. However HR department employees aren’t helping the talent pool of would-be candidates at all. Often times they never reply to follow up phone calls or emails after an interview.

Network like an entrepreneur
Employees could learn a thing or two from their entrepreneur cousins, such as the art of networking. Suits are often hesitant to meet new people outside of their established circle, while small business owners work at it like their mortgages were at stake. In many cases, they probably are. A word to the wise, don’t let your own network of contacts wilt and die by being smug and “stranger averse” at corporate shindigs.

TRENDSPOTTING
The see-through CEO
An information leak from corporate America foretells that the next trend in corporate culture is “radical transparency.” While it seems like an odd reversal of corporate values, increasing companies are encouraging employees to tell their deepest darkest secrets. For one CEO in particular, this meant stripping his company bare and getting into an industry-wide dustup online. (N.B. Article contains no nudity.)

Do you... need an intern? With the school year’s end nearing and a looming labour shortage in general, many North American companies could use a bright and hopeful student to lend a hand. However there are three crucial steps to setting up an internship program.
  • Companies should develop a job description based on defined needs.
  • Contact the career services departments of post-secondary education institutions in the area well ahead of summer.
  • Prepare internally: Internship programs don’t run themselves.
