Workplace Challenges
Ageism troubles in the workplace
Change is afoot in North American society in terms of attitudes regarding age in the workplace. Once ageism, discrimination based on someone's age, was reserved for graying individuals who were seen as past their prime or over the hill. Now, as the demographic pyramid tips in favour of older employees, there is a new ageism against recent graduates and the younger half of the workforce. The stigma is that youth doesn't seem to share the same values or work ethic as older, founding employees. In truth, the most diverse companies are the strongest and this includes a healthy balance between young and old employees.

Newsworthy
Union anger at "Dickensian" toilet policy
Dickensian is an adjective to describe poverty, distress, and exploitation described in the Victorian era novels of Charles Dickens. Think: Oliver Twist. Now, in modern-day England, a union representing meat processing plant employees accuses their employer of adopting an unnecessarily strict bathroom policy. They're being forced to punch out every time they need to go to the bathroom, or 'loo,' in British slang.

Career Options
Think Outside the Cubicle: Top Careers for Individualists
So you're a non-conformist and not suited for a job that keeps you chained to a desk in a cubicle farm. Perhaps you were given too much alone time to play as a child and not enough structure and discipline. Yet, despite not being a part of the modern-day norm, there are several job options that will allow these individualists to have fulfilling careers. For example, an entrepreneur, a cruise director, an environmental scientist or a special education teacher are just a couple of options for these mavericks.

Time Management
Get some work done on the daily commute
Workplace pundits want Canadian employees to whip out their laptops and other mobile computing devices on their daily commutes on public transport, turning their journeys into productive working time. That's easier said than done. Commuters in major Canadian cities know it's hard enough to turn the pages of a broadsheet newspaper in the scrum inside a subway car during rush hour. However, the payoffs are to hit the ground running when they finally arrive at the office, avoiding having to stay late and increased flexibility in terms of leaving early for the cottage on a Friday afternoon.

Workplace Issues
Married to the biz for richer, for poorer
This article compares starting a business to starting a serious romantic relationship with a partner-it takes up a whole lot of time and money. Initially, there should be dating, which is equated to starting your business on a part-time basis. Then, if there are other business partners involved, a budding entrepreneur should sign a "pre-nup" in the form of a shareholder agreement, outlining how the profits will be shared and who is responsible for what. Lastly, it's important to have "me time" by taking a vacation from your new small business in order to come back to it rejuvenated and refreshed.

Do you… call hotlines? An American, state-run employment centre published the wrong phone number in several places, leading unsuspecting job seekers to something completely different.
  • Individuals who dialed the number for the Maryland Job Service Hotline ended up calling a number for women soliciting sex.
  • The incorrect number was also listed in the phone book and on other Web sites.
  • State officials say they are aware of the problem and are working to correct it.
