NEWSWORTHY
Japan may track defence officials with GPS phones
This may be a question of the chicken and the egg. Religion is on the wane but private sector theft and public sector corruption run rampant all over the globe. Now, Japanese authorities have come up with a solution: they will be tracking defence department officials' movements using GPS-enabled cell phones, often used by parents to monitor children's whereabouts. Duffing around a tony golf course with defence contractor? Busted. Checking into a love hotel with a mistress? Busted. Sloshing about in an Izakaya in Ginza? Better sleep it off.

Loyalty may be coming back to the workplace
"Loyalty? Never heard of her!" you might overhear a non-committal colleague exclaim as he packs his belongings into a cardboard box. Loyalty is an outdated workplace notion that was tossed out the window two decades ago. Yet, low and behold, a recent study shows respondents are feeling upbeat about tarnished company/employee relations. Loyalty is up several points from 2002, when company "rightsizing" and employee "ship-jumping" were at all-time highs.

Don't blame it on the moonlight
But you could blame this headline on Milli Vanilli. Are you working for a second employer in secret? Many individuals are forbidden by contract to work for another employer. Even still, up to one third of all Britons hold a second job on the sly. It's a case of "Don't ask, Don't tell" or "What you don't know won't hurt you." Strangely enough, moonlighters aren't just inspired by the extra cash; other factors also come into play.

STARTING A NEW JOB
Understanding the corporate culture
Corporate culture is the Je ne sais quoi of the business world. Every company has one, but not every corporate culture is a perfect fit for every individual. It's best to find a job in a company and field suited to your personality. To be more precise, you should feel like you are part of the team, not like a space alien that's been blasted from Mars into a cubicle.

Hear that sound? It's the distant, sad wail of the dot-matrix printer. Now, for the winners of the Wired News Saddest-Cubicle Contest:
  • In 1st place: An IT guy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, whose desk is penned in by heavily-used filing cabinets in a windowless conference room, near a poorly ventilated bathroom and a microwave.
  • 2nd place: This poor guy's office didn't have enough desks to go around, so he pulled drawers out of a filing cabinet and stuck his monitor on top.
  • 3rd place: This thumbs-up guy sits at a desk that was cut in half and propped up against a column. The wiring doesn't even work, but his morale is still high.
