Workers play fast and loose with ethics in India
Business travelers to India have more to worry about than negotiating a fair price for the taxi on their way to a business meeting. A recent survey of Indian employees showed that respondents didn't feel any compunction about telling the truth at work. This included falsifying their arrival and departure times, using company phone lines for personal, long distance calls, and misleading clients. Of the eight cities polled, Kolkata was the most honest and Ahmedabad the least. Yet, despite these apparent white lies, an overwhelming majority of respondents said that they would blow the whistle on a dishonest colleague.

Staff urged to dress down, stay cool as U.N. heats up
Is that a picnic on the lawn of the United Nations? No, it's a meeting of the Security Council. The international organization, known for diplomacy and protocol, is relaxing its summer dress code in a bid to cut air conditioning costs and reduce its headquarters' carbon-dioxide emissions. If the August-long trial is successful the U.N. will also lower the thermostat in the winter, bringing back into vogue the once-popular cardigan sweater. True to form, a U.N. spokesman pronounced "business casual" as the new policy, but also refused to play fashion police.

Green Workplace
Four-day week not energy saving
A conservative workplace critic pooh-poohs the idea of the four-day workweek for the Nova Scotian public sector, motivated by eco-thinking and work/life balance. First of all, 40 hours in four days means that businesses will have to stay open longer, reducing the perceived energy savings from running the lights, computers and photocopiers. Also a four-day week may make it difficult to interact with more traditional organizations. Other municipalities have tried the abridged workweek and report mixed results. In short, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Workplace Issues
Organize your staff
Management leaders must oversee their direct reports by providing them with guidance. Planning weekly meetings, sharing to-do lists, installing the same software company-wide are all ways to increase your team's productivity. Ensuring each individual's success off-sets the company's cost of employing them and provides greater returns.

Negotiation Tips
Charmers lose out at bargaining table
"Oh, he's so charming but a terrible negotiator!" It turns out that the flirtatious negotiators are actually lambs in the boardroom. A recent study by two Berkeley business professors showed that flirtatious bargaining partners were more likeable but less successful than neutral ones. In the study, men tended to pick up on their counterparts' flirtatious behaviour more often than the women.

Do you... feign sincerity at work? Sometimes it's necessary to appear interested and engaged even when it's not humanly possible. Act interested by doing the following:
  • Make eye contact.
  • Break eye contact.
  • Overshare.
  • Swivel your head.
  • Lean back in your chair.
  • Communicate by saying nothing.
