The Jobboom Index Declines Slightly despite the Creation of 1,400 New Jobs

Quebec created 1,400 new jobs during the month of October. Despite this increase, the province’s November Jobboom Index drops by 3.1 points. This decrease is based on the data that Statistics Canada has been compiling over the past ten years, which show that employment in Quebec has a tendency to decline during the month of November. Therefore, the province’s labour force prediction settles at 42.8 %, always at the “unfavourable” level.

In October, the Goods-producing sector reported the creation of 16,900 new jobs. It is the Construction sub-sector that generated the most new jobs (+ 16,400), followed by Manufacturing (+ 2,600) and Agriculture (+ 300). However, the two other sub-sectors recorded losses: Forestry, fishing, mining, oil and gas (-1,800 jobs) and Utilities (-500).

Wherein the Services sector is concerned, it saw the loss of 28,900 jobs during the month of October. It is the Commerce sub-sector that was the most impacted (-15,600 jobs), followed by Professional, scientific and technical services (-9,400), Public administration (-8,800), Other services
(-6,800), Accommodation and food services (-2,300), and Finance, insurance, real estate and leasing (-200). The other sub-sectors faired better: Transportation and warehousing (+ 6,900 jobs), Educational services (+ 2,800), Business, building and other support services (+ 1,600), and Information, culture and recreation (+ 500).

Over the course of the past year, employment in Quebec decreased by 1.6 %, but increased by 14 % over the last decade.
